Donny van de Beek to Manchester United welcomed by Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as he believes transfer will help Netherlands team

Virgil van Dijk believes Donny van de Beek’s move to Manchester United is a ‘great step’ for the midfielder.

Van de Beek is close to completing a £40million move from Ajax to the Red Devils.

The 23-year-old has been a standout star for the Dutch club and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has beaten a number of other top teams to his signature.

Real Madrid were believed to be seriously interested, while Tottenham are said to have made a last-ditch attempt to snatch him away from United.

Liverpool star Van Dijk said the move was great for Van de Beek and for the Dutch national team as they aim to go one step closer and win the Nations League this year.

“I wish Donny all the best wholeheartedly,” said van Dijk in a press conference ahead of the international games against Poland and Italy.

“It is great for him and for the Dutch national team.

“It’s a great club and step for Donny, and the same goes for Nathan Ake [to Manchester City].”

Van de Beek would not be leaving the Netherlands national team early to finalise his move to Man United, though.

“No, I think it is almost ready,” Netherlands’ interim head coach Dwight Lodeweges said.

“I think there is still a [medical] inspection to go. It will take place.

“I am certainly not going to send Donny home, because he wanted to be here himself. That is also important.”
