Alastair Cook: Former England captain hits unbeaten 150 for Essex in first innings since Test retirement

Sir Alastair Cook struck a sublime century in his first innings for Essex since retiring from Test cricket.

The former England captain, who scored 12,472 Test runs, hit an unbeaten 150 against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner’s.

Cook, 34, called time on his international career in September with 147 against India and picked up where he left off, reaching his 64th first-class hundred off his 200th ball.

The opener, who was knighted in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, got to 150 not out before Essex captain Simon Harmer declared with his team on 387-5.

England’s record run-scorer hit 21 boundaries off the student attack and delivered an ominous message to County Championship bowlers for the season ahead.

And he potentially fired a warning to England’s openers, particularly Keaton Jennings, who has struggled for form in recent Test series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

The future remains bright for England, however, as 21-year-old Ollie Pope struck his maiden first-class double century with 251 for Surrey in the Champion County match against MCC.
