Tottenham new stadium update: Golden Cockerel arrives and is pictured on top of the South Stand

Tottenham’s iconic Golden Cockerel has arrived at the club’s new stadium and is now sitting proudly on top of the South Stand.

Photos released on the official Spurs Twitter account showed the iconic monument being brought to the new ground on a trailer, before being set in place by a crane.

The new version stands at approximately 4.5m tall and is nearly double the height of the original, which was was first seen atop White Hart Lane’s West Stand in 1909.

It was moved to the East Stand 49 years later, pointing north so that the Cockerel’s left wing faced the pitch; this meant the monument, when seen from inside the stadium, mirrored Tottenham’s logo.

The Cockerel was replaced in the 1980s and faced south, but was eventually repositioned to face north after fans had their say. It stayed in this position until Spurs stopped calling White Hart Lane home on May 14, 2017.

Tottenham’s original plans for their new stadium had the Golden Cockerel facing north, as tradition dictates, but it’s placement on the South Stand would have meant it overlooked the pitch.

And so the club decided against it pointing north, and opted to continue the tradition of the Cockerel’s left wing facing the pitch.

This means the new Cockerel faces east from it’s position on the South Stand.

This can be seen on further time-lapse footage, displayed below.

Last week, the pitch markings were painted on at the new stadium, though Spurs will not be playing at the ground before the end of 2018.
